Western Station is the 5th channel of Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko and takes inspirations from movies set in the Wild West, in particular those in the Spaghetti Western genre.

Setting and inspiration[]

The stage takes place at nighttime, in a desert zone spanning a mountain which features a trail cover in entrails (a reference to the name) and classic western elements such as a mine and a graveyard. Gex's disguise here is that of a poncho-wearing cowboy, but his hat differs between the two versions of the game. A donkey can be ridden here throughout the level in order to climb the steep hills. Most of the enemies are undead versions of Western archetypes, but the scorpions from Enter the Gecko return here as well.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • The level's name, The Organ Trail, is a reference to the 1985 edutainment game The Oregon Trail.
  • Gex's costume is based on the various western characters that Clint Eastwood played.
  • The golden scorpions from Kung-Fu Theater are reused in this level, albeit recolored solid green.

Beta/Protoypes[]

  • In the debug menu the level is listed as Gtown2. Its sister level, Gtown1, was cut at some point during the game's development.
  • In the prototype version of the game, Gtown1 and the Western Station were called Cowboy TV and The Cowboy Channel respectively. It's assumed that those names were used to differentiate between the two levels during development before Gtown1 got cut.
  • In Deep Pocket Gecko, channel name was changed to Western.
  • Interestingly, the mission text strings for Gtown1 can be found in the mission select menu of Western Station/GTOWN2 in the December 30th, 1998 prototype.
  • In the Feburary 8th, 1999 prototype, Gex had an unused costume, which had Gex wearing Mexican attire with a sombero. Additionally, they would have an idle animations. However, this costume would be scrapped and replaced with the Clint Gexwood outfit in the retail release.
