DracuGex Picture In Need Of Inspiration
The Design and Inspiration section is incomplete. Try adding more to this section. Make sure, you have cited your sources of possible references. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. Just make you don't get into speculative territory.

The Abyssmal is a secret level in Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. It can be found on the way to Fairytales TV in Slappy Valley; when you come across a pool of water, look to the left, the entrance to the secret level is in an alcove. Gex dresses as a scuba diver here and as such must keep an eye on his air supply. As it takes place underwater, it uses the same music as The Buccaneer Program (minus the sound of shivering timbers). This level's theme is a very direct reference to the 1989 James Cameron film, The Abyss. Collecting all 50 Fly Coins in time rewards you with the star token for the Vault in Mission Control. A Lost Gex Tape can also be found here. Gex must also avoid explosive sea mines.

Strategy[]

First and foremost, collect the fly coins in the airlock. Then, take a dive. This is when things get interesting.

As soon as you dive into the ocean, be aware of the oxygen meter on the right side of the screen. Various oxygen generators are laced throughout the stage in case the oxygen meter runs low, so head to one to replenish your air. As for where players should go, immediately head to the inside of the ship and put the battery in its proper place, turning on the machinery at the top of the ship. Head to the cannon and tinker with the buttons and switches by tail whipping them, making the cannon face a weak wall and fire at it, revealing a pathway to the Lost Gex Tape. After the tape is collected, the strategy becomes simple: just swim around the ship and collect the fly coins. Two things must be focused on, and they are your oxygen meter and the mines. For the latter, rapidly tail whip the mines while moving to avoid getting hurt by their explosions. Once all of the fly coins are collected, the starfish will appear above the airlock. Swim to the starfish and collect it to beat the level.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only level which features a "clean" version of the music of The Buccaneer Program; the shivering timbers present in that level's music are absent here.
  • The level’s name comes from the movie “The Abyss”, a movie about a group of people looking for a nuclear submarine in the middle of the ocean and encounter aliens.
