Fish Frequency

Fish Frequency channel logo.

Fish Frequency is a cut level from Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko, which is only playable in the December 30th, 1998 prototype of the game. The level seems to reference wildlife documentaries and movies such as Jaws. The level is mostly unfinished and some collision issues are present in this build of the level. Still, Fly Coins and TV remotes can be found in the level. It's speculated that it was removed due to time constraints.

However, through the debug menu level select, it shown under 'N64 levels' in the prototype. It's possible that the level was supposed to appear in Slappy Valley. This is due to its mission select screen being triggered from that hub area.

Trivia[]

  • Similar to Gtown1, it's one of the few levels with some collision detection. Unlike the former, there are no mission objectives for the level despite the presence of remotes.
  • It's the only unused level which has a TV screen graphic to coincide with its channel name. This implies that it was pretty far in development before it was cut.
  • Like the secret level, The Abyssmal, it's one of the few levels to take place in an underwater setting. However, unlike the secret level mentioned, it appears it was going to be more platforming based. This is due to the lack of swimming and the abundance of various platforming sections throughout the level (including some climbable surfaces).
  • It's one of the few cut levels along with Gtown1 which was showcased in the 1999 preview trailer for Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko despite not being present in the retail version.
  • It shares the similar level ID as The Abyssmal, being WATER15 and WATER16 respectively.
  • From the Slappy Valley hub, selecting the level would trigger its mission select screen. This implies that, Fish Frequency was going to appear in that hub area. Additionally, confirms it was N64 exclusive level. Despite this, the TV screen graphic can still be found in the retail version via hacking the game.
  • Despite, having an official name, the placeholder name from the mission select screen is called 'WATER TV'
