Planet X is the secret, science fiction-themed world of Gex. It is unlocked after obtaining all pieces of the world's remote. There are a total of 8 levels in this world. Completing the final level unlocks the special ending of the game.

Background[]

Gex can choose optionally to clear Planet X after he gets a hold of all the pieces of the Planet X remote by clearing the hidden bonus rounds in each world. Clearing this world unlocks the special ending of the game, but it is not necessary for completion.

The world doesn't have a boss, although it does have a semi-hidden pseudo-boss Easter Egg in one of the levels. Gex can enter Planet X only with the Planet X remote selected from the remote bar, used on any of the other level maps. It is impossible to enter Planet X any other way.

Planet X is the only world map that features an interactive navigation method, in the form of 6 teleporters that can transport Gex to other areas of the map. It is unknown why this was designed this way, but it probably has to do with orientation and to confine the player to one, two or three levels at a given time, so as to avoid orientation confusion with the sheer amount of levels that comprise this map (8 levels, plus two monitors that lead to Cemetery World and The Dome).

Setting and inspiration[]

Planet X is inspired by old science fiction films and TV shows, like Star Wars, Star Trek and Lost in Space, featuring aliens, robots and futuristic cities. Gex even says quotes from the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises.

Trivia[]

  • The world's name could be a reference to the astronomical term for a hypothetical planet that has yet to be discovered in our solar system. Pluto was initially believed to be "Planet X," but later lost this distinction as its planet status was reduced to dwarf planet. Today, it is commonly believed among astronomers that Planet X does not exist.[1]
  • It was originally meant to be a regular world in the game but was scrapped and later included as a bonus unlockable world.
  • For an optional world, Planet X is the largest one in the entire game, with 8 levels in total and even a dedicated teleporter mechanic.
  • The music tracks for The Project and The Web are different from the other levels in this world.
  • There is a Breakout themed mini game in one of the levels in this world (3DO version only).
